visualizing the electric grid

Screenshot of the NPR electric grid map

Starting Monday, NPR is running a 10-part series about the U.S. electric grid, power sources and energy consumption. My contribution to the project, working with Andrew Prince and Robert Benincasa: a multi-layered interactive map of the grid as it exists now, proposed / projected additions, power plant locations (with a filter by type), and a look at solar and wind power.

Love this design. The simplicity of fade-on, fade-off info density is straightforward. I would have loved to see what costs are associated with proposed lines :), though I’m definitely in favor of a more sustainable USA.
