By The Numbers: Today's Military
To go with a series of NPR stories about “who serves” in the U.S. military, I worked with editor Erica Ryan and news librarian JoElla Straley on a very large infographic about military demographics and casualties.
The number of Americans serving in the military is a small slice of the U.S. population. Here, a graphical look at the makeup of the military and the sacrifices those troops have made.
At one point I went back to double-check the Afghanistan / Iraq casualty numbers, only to find that they had been updated. It was a sobering process to update my spreadsheet — a few more Air Force personnel injured in one place, a couple more Army soldiers killed in another, and so on.
A few of the sources that informed this graphic:

- Navy Department Library: American War and Military Operations Casualties: Lists and Statistics
- Selective Service System: Induction Statistics
